One on One with Jaguar Love's Johnny Whitney
Those familiar with Seattle band 'The Blood Brothers', who split in 07 would recognise Johnny Whitney's voice in his new outfit, Jaguar Love. Together with TBB member and long time friend Cody Vololato and Jay Clark ex Pretty Girls Make Graves, the trio have redefined their act.
"The Blood Brother's was over the top" says Whitney, "people would come to our shows for a rollercoaster, they were just looking for a ride." 10 years of the Blood Brothers was great but became tedious for the band and they eventually split in 2007.
Jaguar Love was quickly formed in 2007, not long after the split.
"Jaguar Love allowed us to branch out, with a more traditional sound and chord music structure", daring to even claim "classic rock". For those who haven't heard their debut Take Me To The Sea album, consider it fun rock that you can dance to.
Take me to the Sea only took 3 months to create, the boys spending a month and a half to write and almost the same amount of time to record. Anyone would agree that Jaguar Love have a unique sound. When asked about where any inspiration came from, Whitney claims "not to be egoistical, but we have a thing. We have been doing this for a long time."
What were you listening to while working on the new album?
"I had the new Against Me album playing. Graduation, by Kanye West. Pretty much listened to that every day".
I hear you like hip hop? Have you thought of ever laying down a track?
"I would write for any hip hop artist or rapper. I would write the shit out of it!" however Johnny was cautious to ever perform his own hip hop act.
How about a collaboration?
"I would definitely do a chorus" with eagerness in his voice.
What songs go off Live for you guys?
"Jaguar Pirates and Highways of Gold, I guess the first three songs of the album. They are always fun to play."
What impression do you want to leave your new Aussie audience?
"As long as people come and dance and have a good time, that's all we can ask for!"
Will there be anything new for us?
"We are working on two new songs. Hopefully we have our shit together by then."
Could we be the first to hear them live on this tour?
"As long as we get our shit together, hopefully yes.
Jaguar Love will be touring Australia for the Soundwave festival with long time friends 'Minus the Bear'.
With a huge line-up confirmed, Johnny said "they are flattered" playing alongside huge international acts.
"It's much different with festivals, much better production. It's not a gungy small club." As far as fitting in, "there are a lot of metal bands, " stating the obvious fact they are a little "different".
This will be Jaguar Love's first time in Australia and their first ever personal visit to WA.
"I can't wait to see the West Coast"
Jaguar love play 2.20pm on stage 6 on March 2 at Blue Steel Oval in Perth.
